Level 2: the role holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work in country programs; or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

ROLE PURPOSE:

 

As an integral member of the Save the Children operations team, your role will be to provide support to the Zwedru based Deputy Chief of Party Operations in delivering programme and other operational functions by safely transporting staff, partners, visitors and other people to ensure we are able to deliver our work to children and those that help them. You will also be responsible for assisting the secure loading and transportation of goods and materials, and conducting assessment and maintenance/ repairs of vehicles, motorcycles that assist Save the Children to perform our work.

The post holder must recognise that he/she is often seen as the public face of the organisation and so will be expected to behave in a suitable manner, and ensure that our vehicles reflect this in how they are driven and maintained.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

 

Reports to: Deputy Chief of Party Operations

Dimensions: Save the Children has been in Liberia for many years. This role will focus on our full spectrum programmes including child protection/ safeguarding, education literacy boost, school health and nutrition, school feeding/ commodity management and Livelihood.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

 

Mechanic / Driver:

 

  • Ensure fleet safety and that all vehicles are compliant with fleet safety standards; ensures that all vehicles are fitted with fully functional fire extinguishers, well stocked first aid kits, road recovery tools (subject to terrain of the area of operation).
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs of all SCI vehicles, motorcycles and generators as instructed by Line Manager and according to set standards on intervals of maintenance.
  • Keep documented records of maintenance, repairs, fuel and lubricant records, daily checklist, fault reports, job cards in appropriate files in the Fleet Office represented locally by the Supply Chain Officer.
  • Riders and Drivers are responsible for the care and cleanliness of their designated vehicles and motorcycles - Mechanic Assistant dedicatedly cares for and ensures the generators are clean and in a good state of repair.
  • Keep an auditable record of all tools and equipment used in the workshop.
  • Abide to all safety standards (wear overall, safety boots, eye googles as deem applicable) appropriate for mechanic work especially working underneath a vehicle with lift supports.

Follow-up with drivers to ensure "Daily checklists" are completed daily and spot checks are done for early detection of damage on SCI vehicles.

Mechanic/ Driver:

 

  • Be ready to be deployed as a driver at coordination office or other SCI operational areas as per demand and instructions from Line Manager.
  • To ensure the safe loading and transportation of authorised personnel and goods associated with the Save the Children programme.
  • To ensure that Save the Children vehicle is cleaned and well maintained inside and outside at the beginning and end of duty.
  • To drive in a manner suitable for the road conditions and respecting the traffic rules and Save the Children's set speed limits.
  • To ensure that the log books, fuel and maintenance records are properly maintained and monthly log sheets are filled and submitted to the line manager, in time.
  • Safety and security requires that any communications equipment installed in the vehicle is in working condition also, and any faults must be reported. The post holder must ensure that they have a working means of communication with them at all times, e.g. GSM cell phone.
  • To perform all routine checks (daily, weekly, monthly) required and perform the basic maintenance checks stated on the vehicle(s) assigned to the post holder. The post holder is responsible for ensuring that the vehicle is cleaned inside and out on a regular basis.
  • To ensure that the vehicle(s) assigned to the post holder are carrying all necessary equipment, tools and documentation as per the policy of the organisation.
  • To ensure that all tools and equipment provided to the post holder are kept safely and available in the car being driven. The post holder will be required to account for any loss of this equipment.

To inform the line manager of any due vehicle service in good time, and remind the line manager of renewals required for insurance, registration or road-worthiness.

Essential

 

  • Must have attain at least basic certificate in education or Form 3.
  • Must have at least 3 years driving experience preferably with an INGO
  • Must possess a valid Driver's license.
  • Sound knowledge of road systems.
  • Knowledge of 4X4 Vehicle systems.
  • Experience & knowledge in performing basic maintenance checks.
  • Must be able to write and speak English.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly, effectively and confidently with international Staff through one to one contact and by use of cell phone and HF & VHF Radio equipment.
  • Ability to be reasonable to other road users and must be security conscious.
  • Must be flexible and sociable.
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children's aims, values, and principles.

    1. The post holder is required to sign Save the Children's Child Protection Policy and Code of Conduct and respect their requirements and values. All Save the Children staff must understand their responsibilities concerning reporting of violations to this policy.

Security

 

    1. The post holder must remain mindful that Save the Children's operations can take place in potentially insecure environments, and therefore must heed any instructions relating to security from senior managers. The post holder is authorised to refuse to drive in situations where he/she believes the passengers are asking that such instructions be ignored.
    2. The post holder must report all security incidents immediately to the Country Director or Logistics Manager.
